Many executioners were specialists. They traveled to different areas to work. In the past, they also had other jobs. In Europe, they often worked as knackers. This means they dealt with animal bodies. They also cleaned latrines and cesspools.

Because of their work, many people shunned them. This means people stayed away from them. In France, executioner families lived in isolation. In Japan, they were part of a group called Burakumin. In Korea, they were called Baekjeong.

Some families did this job for a long time. The Sanson family in France had six executioners. In Britain, the Pierrepoint family had three. Executioners even had their own graveyards. These graveyards used simple, rough stones for markers.
