Many people believe he was a real person who lived a long time ago. He is often called a martyr, which means someone who dies for their religious beliefs. Because of his life, he is honored as a hero by many different groups. Christians, Druze, and some Muslims all respect him as a figure of faith. He is especially known as a military saint because of his history as a soldier.

Historians and religious texts offer different details about how his life worked. One tradition says he was a Greek from Cappadocia in the Roman Empire. He may have served as a soldier in the Praetorian Guard for Emperor Diocletian. Some ancient texts say his father, Gerontius, was also in the Roman service. His mother, Polychronia, is said to have raised him as a Christian.

This story was not part of his earliest records but became very popular later. It tells of how George saved a princess in the city of Silene. He used a lance, sometimes called Ascalon, to defeat a fierce dragon. This legend helped shape how people imagine him in art and stories. Even today, his image on a horse with a spear is easy to recognize.
