Some stories say he traveled to the town of Rimini. There, he helped Christians who were facing hard times. He wanted to comfort them and help their suffering. Later, he chose to live as a hermit. A hermit is someone who lives alone to focus on faith. He moved to Mount Titano to build a chapel and a monastery.

History tells us Marinus came from the island of Arba. This island is known today as Rab. It sits in the Adriatic Sea. At that time, it was part of the Roman Empire.

Many specific details come from old stories and records. The year 301 is a very important date for his followers. This is when he founded the chapel and monastery.

His feast day is celebrated every year on September 3. This day is also the national holiday for San Marino. Legend says Marinus died in the winter of 366. His last words were about leaving people free. Some think he meant freedom from the Emperor and the Pope.

Today, the state of San Marino carries his name. The small group of people from his monastery became a whole nation.

Even though some parts of his life are legendary, they matter a lot. Historians say his story might contain grains of real facts. The earliest written records of his life date back to the 10th century. A monk named Eugippus wrote about a monastery in that area earlier. His legacy lives on through the freedom of the republic.
