Sang Nila Utama is a famous figure in Southeast Asian history. Many people know him as the founder of the Kingdom of Singapura. He was a prince from a place called Palembang. After he became king, he took the title Sri Tri Buana. This title means "Lord of Three Worlds." It might refer to the heavens, the human world, and the underworld. Some people think it refers to his rule over Java, Sumatra, and Temasek.

The story of how he found Singapore is very exciting. While hunting on Bintan, he chased a stag up a hill. At the top, he saw an island with white sand. This island was called Temasek. During the voyage, a great storm hit his ship. To save the vessel, he threw his golden crown into the sea. The storm stopped, and he arrived safely at the island.

Once on the island, he saw a beautiful, strange animal. It had a red body, a black head, and a white breast. He asked his minister, Demang Lebar Daun, what it was. The minister said it was a lion. Sang Nila Utama thought this was a good sign. He decided to build a city there. He renamed the island Singapura, which means "Lion City" in Sanskrit.

Historical details about his life are found in the Malay Annals. He was the son of King Sang Sapurba. He married Princess Wan Sri Bini from Bintan Island. They had two sons named Raja Kechil-Besar and Raja Kechil-Muda. Sang Nila Utama ruled for 48 years before he died in 1347. His son, Sri Wikrama Wira, became the second king. He was buried on a hill now called Fort Canning Hill.

Scholars have many different ideas about these stories today. Some believe the lion was actually a Malayan tiger. Others think the stories are legends rather than exact history. Even so, many agree that a settlement existed in the 14th century. Some people think the story might be linked to a ruler named Parameswara. Whether the stories are myths or facts, they remain a very important part of Singapore's history.
