Many rulers fought to control this important place.

The story of Lorraine began a long time ago in the year 855. It started as part of a kingdom called Lotharingia. This name came from leaders named Lothair I or Lothair II. The kingdom was first split into two parts called upper and lower duchies. The upper duchy eventually became the Duchy of Lorraine.

Over many centuries, these borders changed many times. Some parts were ruled by the Holy Roman Empire. Other parts were later taken by the Kingdom of France.

History in Lorraine has been very busy and sometimes difficult. In 1766, the Kingdom of France took control of the duchy and the Duchy of Bar. Later, the area faced many changes during big wars. For example, the German Empire gained part of Lorraine in 1871. During the Nazi occupation from 1940 to 1944, the borders changed again.

Today, about 2,356,000 people live in this part of France. Lorraine is made of four main parts called departments. These are Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle, and Vosges. The city of Metz is the regional prefecture.
