Carolingian Empire

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Carolingian Empire was a massive Frankish-dominated state in Western and Central Europe. It existed during the Early Middle Ages from 800 to 887. This empire was ruled by the Carolingian dynasty. This family had served as kings of the Franks since 751. They also became kings of the Lombards in Italy in 774. Many historians consider this empire the first phase of the Holy Roman Empire.

The empire grew through constant military campaigns and political shifts. Charlemagne, a powerful leader, expanded the borders significantly. He defeated the Lombard Kingdom in 774 and annexed it. He also fought the Saxons for many years from 772 to 804. In 794, he forced Tassilo III, the Duke of Bavaria, to give up his title. Charlemagne even defeated the Avar confederation by 803. These victories helped the empire reach a huge size.

Charlemagne's coronation was a major political event. In 800, Pope Leo III crowned him Roman emperor. This happened because Charlemagne provided political protection to the Pope. This act disregarded the claims of the Byzantine Empire. The empire's heartland was Francia, located between the Loire and Rhine rivers. Charlemagne chose Aachen as his primary residence.

After Charlemagne died in 814, his son Louis the Pious became emperor. Louis was deeply interested in religious matters and education. He worked to restore many monasteries that had disappeared. He also encouraged the study of reading, singing, and letters.

However, his reign was marked by instability. He faced many rebellions from his own sons. These family struggles led to a long civil war.

The civil war eventually led to the division of the empire. In 842, the Oaths of Strasbourg were made. These oaths between Charles and Louis symbolized the birth of France and Germany. Later, the Treaty of Verdun in 843 settled the partition. Lothar received the Central Frankish Realm and the imperial title. He ruled the land between the Rhine and Rhone rivers. Louis the German took the Eastern Frankish Realm.

Official acts were always written in Latin. While we call it the "Carolingian Empire" today, people then used other names. They often called it the "Christian empire" or the "empire of the Romans and Franks." These names reflected their traditions of imperial statehood.

The empire eventually fractured completely. In 884, Charles the Fat briefly reunited the kingdoms. However, the Frankish nobility deposed him in 887. By 888, the empire had broken apart. In the west, the legitimate dynasty was restored in 898. In the east, an illegitimate Carolingian line ruled until 911. This period of history helped shape the modern borders of Europe.
