Life in the empire was shaped by many leaders and many wars. Charlemagne was a very famous ruler who led many campaigns. He often led his armies personally to grow his land. He defeated the Lombard Kingdom in 774 and made it part of his domain. He also fought many wars against the Saxons from 772 to 804. Charlemagne even fought the Avars and won.

Before him, a leader named Charles Martel was very powerful. Martel earned his nickname "the Hammer" after a big victory. He defended Christian Europe at the Battle of Tours in 732. Later, his son Pepin III became king in 741. Charlemagne then took control after his brother Carloman I died.

After Charlemagne died in 814, his son Louis the Pious became emperor. Louis was very interested in religion and learning. He worked hard to restore many old monasteries. He also helped people learn how to read and sing.

Charlemagne's coronation was a major political event. In 800, Pope Leo III crowned him Roman emperor. This happened because Charlemagne provided political protection to the Pope. This act disregarded the claims of the Byzantine Empire. The empire's heartland was Francia, located between the Loire and Rhine rivers. Charlemagne chose Aachen as his primary residence.

Later, the Treaty of Verdun in 843 settled the partition. Lothar received the Central Frankish Realm and the imperial title. He ruled the land between the Rhine and Rhone rivers. Louis the German took the Eastern Frankish Realm.

Official acts were always written in Latin. While we call it the "Carolingian Empire" today, people then used other names. They often called it the "Christian empire" or the "empire of the Romans and Franks." These names reflected their traditions of imperial statehood.

The empire eventually fractured completely. In 884, Charles the Fat briefly reunited the kingdoms. However, the Frankish nobility deposed him in 887. By 888, the empire had broken apart. In the west, the legitimate dynasty was restored in 898. In the east, an illegitimate Carolingian line ruled until 911. This period of history helped shape the modern borders of Europe.
