A gendarmerie is a special type of force that does two jobs at once. It works like a police force for regular people, but it also has military training. These groups are often called paramilitary forces. This means they are not strictly part of the regular army, but they are more disciplined than civilian police.

They use military-style training to handle difficult tasks. This can include things like crowd control or helping during a crisis. Because they are so well trained, they can handle much more than a normal police officer might.

How these groups work depends on the country they serve. In France, the gendarmerie looks after rural areas and small towns. These places make up about 95% of the land in France. They also have many specialized teams for different needs. Some gendarmes work at sea as a coast guard. Others work in the mountains to help with rescues. Some even guard airports or protect the President.

The history of the name goes back a long time. The word comes from an old French phrase meaning "men-at-arms." In the Middle Ages, this described noble soldiers who fought on horseback. The word changed during the French Revolution to mean a police force. Many countries learned about this system from France. This happened during the time of the Napoleonic conquests.

Today, many nations still use this model for their security.

Many different names are used for these forces around the world. In Italy, they have the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza. Spain has the Civil Guard, and the Netherlands has the Royal Marechaussee. Even in Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is called a gendarmerie in French. This is kept for tradition.

Some groups, like the People's Armed Police in China, were created more recently in 1982.

These forces are very useful in the modern world. When a conflict happens, gendarmes can help bring law and order back to a place. They are often used in peacekeeping operations in places like Pakistan or the former Yugoslavia. They can also work together through the European Gendarmerie Force. This helps different countries coordinate their efforts. They provide a steady hand when things are not calm.
