The French Army is the land branch of the French Armed Forces.

A leader called the Chief of Staff of the French Army is in charge of it. This leader reports to the Chief of the Defence Staff. That person is then responsible to the President of France. The Ministry of Armed Forces also helps with equipment and training. Today, the army is an all-volunteer force. This means people choose to join instead of being forced to serve.

Long ago, the army changed how it worked. In the early 15th century, King Charles VII created the first permanent army. He paid soldiers with regular wages instead of using old feudal systems. During the Hundred Years' War, the King needed these reliable troops. Later, King Henry II made things even more regular. He formed standing infantry regiments to replace older militia groups. Some of these were called Les Vieux Corps, or "The Old Corps."

In the 1600s, the army became very organized.

King Louis XIV changed how units were set up. Many modern regiments began during this time. Soldiers often wore grey-white coats with colored linings. Foreign troops wore different colors like red or blue. Famous elite units included the Swiss Guards and the Musketeers. These soldiers were known for using Charleville muskets in battle.

The French Revolution brought huge changes to the military. The army lost many of its old officers during this time. New groups like the National Guard became the core of the force. This era started modern conscription, where the state calls up its people.

Later, Napoleon I led the Grande Armée across Europe. He used heavy artillery and fast cavalry to win. Napoleon also created "all arms Corps" to help his troops move more flexibly. However, the invasion of the Russian Empire in 1812 was very hard. The cold winter and long distances forced a difficult retreat.

In the 1800s, the army's look and tools changed again.

Soldiers wore dark blue coats and red trousers. They were among the first to use Minié rifles. These guns could shoot much further and more accurately. During the First World War, the army grew very large.

By the end of the war, nearly 8.8 million men had been called up. Most of these soldiers fought on the Western Front. They even changed their uniforms to a light blue-grey color to match the trenches.
