A militia is a group of people who are not professional, full-time soldiers. Instead, they are often regular citizens who serve part-time.

These groups can help a regular army by guarding forts or fighting small battles. Sometimes, they work to protect their own towns and laws. In some places, militias act as a pool of people for a country to call upon during hard times. Today, some groups like the United States National Guard are very professional. They train just as hard as full-time soldiers do.

How a militia works depends on the rules of the land. Some militias are officially recognized by a government to help enforce laws. For example, naval militias might be made of local fishermen. They help protect the waters near their homes. In countries with conscription, almost every able-bodied person might be part of the militia. This means they are legally required to help if they are called. Other groups might operate outside the law as private or irregular forces.

The history of militias goes back to ancient times. The word itself comes from the Latin word "miles," which means soldier.

In ancient Rome, it referred to a type of defense service. Long ago in France, Joan of Arc led a militia to help shape the nation. During the French Revolution, the National Guard served as a home defense force. Later, during World War II, the French Resistance used militia tactics to fight against German occupation.

Germany also has a long history with different militia groups. During the Napoleonic Wars, the Lützow Free Corps fought as volunteers. In the years after World War I, many different paramilitary groups formed in Germany. One group was the Einwohnerwehr, which helped citizens protect themselves from crime in 1919. Later, the Nazi Party created the Sturmabteilung, also known as the Brownshirts. At the very end of World War II, Germany formed the Volkssturm. This group included men, women, and children who helped the army by digging ditches.

In Great Britain and its former colonies, militias were very important for local safety. In England, the tradition of the militia dates back to Anglo-Saxon times. Settlers in North America also needed militias to stay safe. In the Jamestown settlement, the militia faced many challenges with local groups. In Bermuda, the militia was responsible for defending the islands. They even had trained artillerymen to guard the forts around St. George's.
