Their main job is often called amphibious warfare. This means they move from ships to the shore. They might land on beaches using boats or landing craft. Some even use helicopters or hovercraft to reach land. They can also use special gear for diving or parachuting.

On ancient Greek and Roman ships, the rowers also had to fight. The Romans were the first to use professional soldiers for ship combat. During the First Punic War, they used a tool called the corvus.

The corvus was a long, pivoting plank with a sharp spike. It would hook onto an enemy ship. This turned sea battles into land battles. This allowed Roman soldiers to use their strength on the enemy's deck.

Many different groups have acted as marines through history. The first organized marine corps was made in Venice. A leader named Enrico Dandolo created ten companies for this group. Later, in 1550, they were officially called "Fanti da Mar."

Spain also has a very old group. In 1537, King Carlos I assigned naval infantry to certain squadrons. This group is the oldest marine corps still serving in the world today.

Different countries organize their marines in different ways. Most nations include marines as part of their navy. For example, the United Kingdom has the Royal Marines. Russia has the Naval Infantry. Some countries put marines in the army instead. The French do this with their marine troops. In the United States, the Marine Corps is its own separate branch.

It is important to know how these groups work together. They link the power of the sea to the power of the land. This connection has shaped history for a very long time.
