Military logistics is the special skill of planning and moving supplies. It is not just about moving things from one place to another. It also includes fixing equipment and keeping soldiers healthy. Logistics involves many steps like buying, storing, and distributing gear. It also means building camps and finding medical help for people. Without good logistics, an army might not be able to finish its mission.

There are three main ways to get supplies to an army. First, soldiers can find things in the field. They might gather food or buy it with cash from local people. Second, they can carry everything they need with them. In the past, this meant using wagons, ships, or even pack animals.

Third, supplies can be sent from large storage centers in the rear. This method became very important after the Industrial Revolution. Modern vehicles need fuel and spare parts that cannot be found in a field.

Logistics has been around since the Neolithic times. Early armies were small because it was hard to feed many people. They used simple tools like spears and bows. During the Iron Age, armies grew larger and used animals like camels or elephants.

The Roman Empire even built roads and canals to help move grain. Later, during the Middle Ages, many groups used a system called feudalism. In this system, local leaders provided their own men and tools.

As time went on, the way leaders used logistics changed. Napoleon used a smart plan to keep his troops moving. He spread his groups out so they could find more food in the fields. In the 1800s, people began to write more about these rules. For example, Edward S. Farrow wrote about moving armies in 1895.

During the Second World War, the term became very popular. A leader named LeRoy Lutes gave a very broad definition of the work. He said it included almost every activity that was not strategy or tactics.

Today, logistics is used in many different ways. In the 1960s, businesses started using the word too. For them, it means managing how goods move through a supply chain.

In the military, the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff use seven main principles. These include things like being simple and being able to change quickly. They also focus on being able to keep going for a long time. This is called sustainability. These rules help ensure that the right things get to the right place at the right time.
