It is a system of movement, breathing, and meditation. Many people use it for health, spirituality, or martial arts training. People practice it all over the world for relaxation or exercise. Some use it to help heal themselves or to prevent illness. It is a way to find balance and peace in daily life.

To practice, you must coordinate your movements with your breath.

There are two main types of practice. The first is called dong gong, or active qigong. This involves slow, flowing, and graceful movements. Some forms even mimic the motion of animals like the White Crane. The second type is jing gong, or passive qigong. This uses still positions and focuses on the breath.

This practice has very deep roots in Chinese culture. It has been around for more than 2,000 years. Ancient traditions like Taoism and Buddhism used it for meditation. Confucianism used it to help improve moral character. Even martial arts use it to help with self-defense. In the past, masters taught these skills to students through oral tradition.

In the late 1940s and 1950s, the name "qigong" became more common. Liu Guizhen helped promote this name to focus on health. He wrote the first public book on the subject in 1957. Later, in 1979, the practice gained new support in China. By the 1990s, it was very popular. Some estimates say between 60 and 200 million people practiced it in China.

The name comes from two Chinese words. The word qi refers to a vital energy in the body. This energy is often linked to breath, air, or light. The word gong means work, skill, or achievement. Together, they describe the work of balancing your life energy. Practitioners use visualization to imagine this energy moving through them. They also use deep breathing and a calm, focused mind.
