Many people in the Sinosphere follow ideas about a vital force called qi. This concept comes from Chinese philosophy and traditional medicine. People often translate the word as vital energy or material energy. It can also mean air, gas, or even breath.

Some thinkers believe qi is the fundamental stuff of the universe. They say everything condenses from qi and eventually dissipates back into it. Different parts of qi can form different things. Heavy qi can form solids, while lighter parts form liquids. The most delicate part is the lifebreath that animates living beings.

How does this force work in the world? Many believe that good health requires qi to flow without being stopped. People try to balance their qi through a practice called qigong. This involves special exercises to cultivate the energy. Martial arts also use the idea of qi.

Some believe that qi can even concentrate in certain body parts. Even Chinese gods and immortals are sometimes thought to have qi. This force is believed to link all living entities together. It helps the body work as one cohesive unit.

The history of qi goes back many centuries. The philosopher Mencius wrote about vital energies in the 4th century BCE. He said that qi could be controlled by willpower. When nurtured, this qi might even reach out into the universe. Another thinker, Zhuangzi, said that wind is the qi of the Earth.

He also believed that humans are born because of the accumulation of qi. When qi dissipates, death occurs. The oldest writing on cultivating qi is found in the Guanzi essay called Neiye.

Looking at the writing, the word qi has a very interesting shape. The modern character uses the "air" radical. It also includes the symbol for rice to show steam rising.

This represents how the universe is constantly changing. In the past, the word was written differently. During the Han dynasty, which lasted from 206 BCE to 220 CE, the writing changed. Scientists today do not use the word qi to mean energy. In physics, energy has a different meaning than the qi used in these traditions.

You might see qi mentioned in many different places today. It is a key part of acupuncture and other therapies. While science does not use the concept, it remains deeply engraved in human thinking.

Other cultures have similar ideas. For example, ancient Hindu traditions speak of prana. Western thinkers once spoke of humours. These are all ways that people try to understand the forces of life. Even in word games like Scrabble, the word qi is famous because it has a Q without a U.
