Many people believe in a special kind of energy. This is not the same as the energy scientists study. In science, energy is something we can measure and test. But in spiritual traditions, this force is often hard to measure. People call it a vital force that moves through all living things. It might even move through the whole universe. Some believe this energy helps people find spiritual enlightenment.

Different cultures have many ways to describe how this works. In China, people talk about qi. They believe qi flows through paths in the body called meridians. Some use tai chi or qi gong to balance this energy. In India, traditions speak of prana. This is a life force that moves through tiny channels called nadis. Some believe prana comes from the sun. Tibetan Buddhism uses the idea of lung, which is a wind-energy.

This idea has a very long history. The ancient Egyptians spoke of ka, a force that sustained life. In ancient Greece, the Stoics talked about pneuma, or a universal breath. The Romans used the word spiritus for this same idea. Native American traditions often speak of a medicine energy. This energy connects all living things together. In Polynesia, people call this powerful force mana.

Some traditions also believe in special energy centers. These are often called chakras. Hindu and Buddhist traditions describe seven main chakras. They start at the base of the spine and go to the top of the head. Each center has its own color and element. People use breath or special sounds to balance them. Western thinkers also studied these ideas. In the 1800s, the Theosophical Society spoke about subtle bodies.

Even in the West, people have had many ideas about this. Alchemists once thought a vital force could turn metals into gold. In the 1700s, Franz Mesmer spoke about animal magnetism. Later, a doctor named Wilhelm Reich spoke about orgone energy. He thought it was a cosmic force for health. Scientists like Hans Driesch even suggested an energy called entelechy. However, modern science does not find evidence for these spiritual energies.
