Animism is a way of seeing the world that many people hold. It is the belief that everything in nature has its own spirit or soul.

This means that animals, plants, and even rocks have a life force. Some people believe that rivers, mountains, and weather systems have spirits too. Some even think that words or metaphors have a special kind of life. To an animist, the world is full of living beings with their own will. This makes the natural world feel very active and connected to people.

How this works depends on how a person views their surroundings. In many traditions, there is no big wall between the physical and spiritual worlds. Instead, everything is part of one big, living system.

People might interact with a tree spirit or a water sprite. These spirits are seen as real beings that can be talked to or respected. For some, being a person is not just about being a human. It is about how you act and relate to the other spirits around you. This creates a way of living that focuses on building many relationships.

History shows that the word "animism" was created by researchers.

An English scholar named Edward Tylor wrote about it in his 1871 book, *Primitive Culture*. He used the word to describe what he thought was an early form of religion. He thought these beliefs came from people's dreams and visions. The word itself comes from a Latin word meaning life or soul. Earlier, a scientist named Georg Ernst Stahl used the term in 1708. He believed souls were what made living things work.

Different groups have very different ways of practicing these beliefs.

For example, some people study the Inuit and see them as animistic. Other groups, like some Aboriginal Australians, might focus more on totemism. In the mid-20th century, a researcher named Irving Hallowell studied the Ojibwe people in Canada. He found that the Ojibwe saw rocks and bears as "persons." They learned how to act like persons by interacting respectfully with these other beings. This helped change how modern scholars think about the subject.

Today, many different kinds of people find meaning in these ideas.

Some people in the modern world call themselves animists. This includes certain nature worshippers and even some artists. Even in modern life, people sometimes treat objects like pets or teddy bears as if they have feelings. This shows that the idea of giving life to things is still very strong. Whether it is an ancient tradition or a new way of thinking, it remains a big part of how humans understand the world.
