Traditional African religions are a diverse group of beliefs.

They include many different ethnic religions across the continent. These traditions often rely on oral history rather than a single holy book. People pass down their beliefs through songs, myths, and festivals. This way of sharing keeps their cultural identity alive for new generations. Most of these faiths are animistic. This means people believe spirits exist in many parts of the world.

Many people believe in a complex world of spirits. Some traditions follow polytheism, which is the belief in many gods. Others believe in pantheism, where the divine is seen in everything. Some groups even believe in one supreme being.

These high gods might work alongside many lower spirits. Ancestors also play a very central role in this worldview. People believe deceased relatives live in a spirit world. These ancestors can still interact with the living. They might offer blessings or advice to their families.

Special leaders help guide these communities. Some are spiritual leaders or priests. Others are mystics who act as healers. These healers often use natural herbs for medicine. They may also practice divination. Divination is a way of seeking answers or telling the future.

Some healers are even called by the gods to serve. They undergo strict training to learn these important skills. They might even find hidden objects through mystical ways. These leaders are vital for the survival of the community.

These traditions are found in 43 different countries today.

It is estimated that over 100 million people follow them. Many followers live in Africa, but these beliefs have spread globally. For example, Yoruba and Igbo religions are popular in the Caribbean. Voodoo is also found in parts of the United States. Some people also combine these traditions with Christianity or Islam. This shows how ancient beliefs can adapt to new times. They remain a deep way of life for many.
