Traditional African medicine is a wide range of healing ways. It uses local plants and African spirituality to help people.

Many different experts help, such as herbalists, midwives, and diviners. These practitioners believe that being sick is not just bad luck. They think illness happens when there is a spiritual or social imbalance. This means a person might be out of balance with their community or the spirit world. Because of this, healing often involves fixing that balance.

Finding out why someone is sick is a careful process. Healers often use incantations, which are special spoken words, to help make a diagnosis.

If the cause is hard to find, they might use divination. Divination is a way to contact the spirit world to find answers. Once the healer knows the cause, they prescribe a treatment. This might be a herbal remedy with spiritual meaning. They may also use fasting, massage, or even steam baths. Some treatments use animal parts, like the bones of baboons for arthritis.

This way of healing has a very long history in Africa. It was the main medical system for millions of people before Europeans arrived. When Europeans came, they brought a different kind of medicine based on science. This was a major turning point for many African cultures. During colonial times, some traditional practices were even made illegal. In Mozambique, for example, diviner-healers were sent to re-education camps after 1975. Even so, these healers remained vital to their communities' health.

There are many amazing plants used in these traditions. In the tropical parts of Africa, people use more than 4,000 different plants.

One example is the Pygeum tree, where the bark is made into tea. Another plant, Tulbaghia violacea, showed promise in studies for lowering blood pressure. In South Africa, researchers even studied sixteen different plants in the KwaZulu-Natal region. Some plants, like the Aloe, are used for infections or injuries. Even weeds can be helpful, like the Anredera cordifolia leaf used for skin rashes.

Traditional medicine is a huge part of life for many people today. A 2018 review showed that about 60% of people in sub-Saharan Africa use these remedies.

This is often because modern medicine can be very expensive. Many hospitals are also far away in big cities. Because of this, many people rely on what is available nearby. Some countries are now trying to combine traditional ways with modern health systems. This helps make sure people can get the care they need in a way that works for them.
