Herbalists believe plants create helpful substances called phytochemicals. Plants make these to defend themselves from the environment. People can extract these useful parts from leaves or roots. There are many ways to prepare these extracts. You can make an infusion by steeping herbs in hot water. A decoction uses boiling water for harder parts like bark. For plants with high mucilage, people use a cold soak called maceration. Tinctures are even stronger because they use alcohol to pull out the parts.

People have been doing this for a very long time.

Evidence shows it began in the Paleolithic era, 60,000 years ago. The Sumerians wrote about plants over 5,000 years ago. In Egypt, the Ebers papyrus from 1550 BCE lists 700 compounds. Greek writers like Theophrastus wrote about plants in the 4th century BCE. In China, the Huangdi Neijing is an early medical text. This book mentions over 100 different herbs. Ancient India also used herbs as a main part of health.

Today, scientists study these plants very closely.

The World Health Organization tracks how people use these remedies. In the United States, the National Institutes of Health funds clinical trials. These trials check if the plants are safe and if they work. Some groups, like Cancer Research UK, look for evidence in specific diseases. In 2015, Australia reviewed many therapies to see if they worked. They found no clear evidence for herbalism in that specific study. Experts want to ensure every product is pure and has the right dose.

It is important to remember that natural does not always mean safe.

Some plants, like nightshade or poison hemlock, are highly toxic. These plants can cause very serious harm to humans. Herbs can also react badly with prescription medicines. For instance, some herbs might make blood pressure medicine work too strongly. Some herbs can even cause liver failure or other health problems. Always talk to a doctor when using herbal products. This helps keep the practice helpful and safe for everyone.
