In the religion of Haitian Vodou, many people believe in spirits called lwa.

These spirits act as messengers or bridges. They connect human beings to Bondye, the supreme creator. Some thinkers say that learning about different lwa helps people understand Bondye better. People believe there are over a thousand lwa in existence. At least 232 of these names are recorded. Each lwa has a unique personality and specific traits. They are also linked to certain colors, days, and objects.

Lwa communicate with people in several ways. They might appear in dreams or through a process called divination. During special ceremonies, the lwa are believed to possess people. The person being possessed is called a chwal, or horse. In this state, the lwa can offer advice, healing, or even warnings. To call them, followers draw designs on the floor called veve. These patterns are made using cornmeal, ash, or coffee grounds.

The history of these beliefs is linked to the Atlantic slave trade. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, enslaved West Africans brought their traditions to the Americas. In the French colony of Saint-Domingue, these West African religions mixed together. This mixture helped form the religion of Vodou. Later, Haitian migrants brought these traditions to Louisiana in the United States. This helped create Louisiana Voodoo. In the late 20th century, revivalist groups in Louisiana began using lwa spirits again.

Lwa are often divided into groups called nanchon, or nations. Two of the largest groups are the Rada and the Petwo. Rada lwa are often seen as sweet-tempered or "cool." Petwo lwa are seen as more forceful, "hot," or even violent. Some lwa are also linked to Roman Catholic saints. For example, Papa Legba is often linked to Saint Peter. The serpent spirit Damballa is sometimes linked to Saint Patrick.

Feeding the lwa is a very important part of ritual life. This is often called mangers-lwa. People offer food and drink to show respect. For example, Damballa might be offered white foods like eggs. Some ceremonies include the sacrifice of animals like chickens or goats. This is done to share life energy with the spirits. The Gede family of lwa is another important group. They are linked to the realm of the dead. Baron Samedi is the leader of the Gede family.
