Orisha are divine spirits that play a very important role in the Yoruba religion. This religion began in West Africa, but the beliefs traveled far away. Today, you can find these traditions in many different places. They are part of Haitian Vodou and Cuban Santería. They are also found in Brazilian Candomblé and Trinidad Orisha. Some people call them orixá in Portuguese or oricha in Spanish.

These spirits help people live well on Earth, which is called Ayé. Many followers believe the orishas were sent by a supreme creator named Olodumare. Some orishas were once humans who lived in the spirit realm called Ọ̀rún. These special spirits are known as Irúnmọlẹ̀. Even though they lived as ordinary people, they had great wisdom. They were born with a lot of divine power.

History shows how these beliefs moved across the ocean. During the Atlantic slave trade, many people brought their traditions to the New World. In Cuba, the Lucumí tradition helped people keep their faith alive. They hid their Yoruba deities behind the images of Catholic saints. This was a way to protect their culture from religious persecution. This helped their traditions survive in new lands like Brazil and Haiti.

There are many different orishas with many different roles. Some traditions say there are 400 plus one orishas. Other stories say there are 700 or even 1,440. This huge number shows how vast the spirit world is. Each orisha rules over something in nature or life. For example, Ogun governs iron and war. Oshun rules over love and rivers. Yemoja is associated with the ocean and motherhood.

A very important idea is a life-force called Aṣẹ. Aṣẹ is the power to make things happen. It runs through all living and non-living things. People use drumming, dance, and prayer to connect with this energy. They also focus on their Orí, which is a part of the soul. Having a good character helps a person find balance. This connection helps people feel inner peace in their daily lives.
