Oshun is a very important figure in the Yoruba religion. She is known as an orisha, which is a type of spirit. Many people consider her the most popular of the 401 orishas. She is linked to many beautiful things like love and beauty. People also associate her with water, fertility, and wealth. She is the patroness of the Osun River in Nigeria.

This river starts in Ekiti State and flows through Osogbo. This city is home to the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove. This grove is the main sanctuary for her worship.

There are different stories about how Oshun became an orisha. One story from the Ifa Literary Corpus tells of the world's creation. It says she was the only female spirit sent to help. The Supreme God, Olodumare, sent spirits to assist Shango. Some versions say the other spirits ignored Oshun at first. This caused the creation of the world to fail. Eventually, Shango made the other spirits respect her. After she died, Olodumare gave her the powers of an orisha.

Followers have many ways to show their respect for her. In Nigeria, the Osun-Osogbo Festival is a major event. This festival lasts for two weeks every August. It takes place at the sacred grove by the river. In Cuba, people in the Santeria religion honor her. They sometimes link her to the Virgin Mary. In the Regla de Ocha tradition, they use music. This includes special ceremonies with violin music. They even mix European classical music with Cuban popular music.

Oshun has also become important in other parts of the world. In Brazil, she was adopted into Afro-Brazilian religions. There, she is a goddess of love and beauty. She is also seen as the "Lady of Gold." This name may refer to copper, which was very valuable. People in Brazil might pray to her for help with marriage. They also ask her to protect small children. In Candomblé Ketu, she is the deity of fresh water. She is also a protector for women who are pregnant.

Many things in nature remind people of Oshun. In Brazil, followers use plants that are sweet and yellow. Yellow colors represent her connection to gold and wealth. One plant used is called the pennywort. Other plants include mints and the Kalanchoe pinnata. People often worship her near rivers and waterfalls. They might even visit mineral water sources to find her. These connections help people feel close to her spirit.
