Culture is like a collection of things that belong to a group. It includes their laws, beliefs, and the art they make. Even though there are many different ethnic groups, they often share similar values. For example, many people in Africa show great respect for elders. They also honor important leaders like kings and chiefs.

These masks can represent spirits, ancestors, or even gods. Many artworks use certain themes that repeat. You might see a mother with her child or a man with an animal. These shapes tell stories about family, power, or even strangers.

Storytelling is another way that people share their history and wisdom.

In many villages, people gather at a meeting place at the end of the day. A storyteller might say "Ugai Itha" to get everyone's attention. When the story is finished, they say "Rukirika" to signal the end. Stories can be funny or very serious. Some are animal tales where a clever Hare tricks a Hyena.

Other stories are day-to-day tales about real life struggles. These stories help children learn about the world around them.

History has shaped how culture is seen today. Long ago, during Roman times, parts of North Africa produced much food for the empire.

Later, during colonial times, some people tried to change African ways. For example, the French sometimes expected people to adopt French culture. This caused some people to turn away from their own traditions. However, many nations have worked to bring their culture back.

Some people think of "Black culture" as one single thing. But that can hide the many differences between people. For instance, African culture is different from Black culture in the United States. Those traditions grew from different histories and experiences. By learning about each specific group, we see the true beauty of the continent.
