In many villages, people gather at a meeting place at the end of the day. A storyteller might say "Ugai Itha" to get everyone's attention. When the story is finished, they say "Rukirika" to signal the end. Stories can be funny or very serious. Some are animal tales where a clever Hare tricks a Hyena.

History has shaped how culture is seen today. Long ago, during Roman times, parts of North Africa produced much food for the empire.

Some people think of "Black culture" as one single thing. But that can hide the many differences between people. For instance, African culture is different from Black culture in the United States. Those traditions grew from different histories and experiences. By learning about each specific group, we see the true beauty of the continent.

These qualities include laws, morals, beliefs, knowledge, art, and customs. Culture represents the entire way of life for a group of people. Africa is home to numerous ethnic nationalities, each with unique languages, dishes, greetings, and music. While these groups are widely diverse, they often share certain dominant cultural traits. For example, many African cultures uphold strong morals and show deep respect for the aged. They also hold high respect for important figures, such as kings and chiefs.

Maulana Karenga, a scholar, provides a specific perspective on the purpose of African art. He suggests that the object itself is not as important as the "soul force" behind it. According to Karenga, all art should be revolutionary, collective, and functional. This means art should not just exist for its own sake. Instead, it should serve a purpose by inspiring change within the community. This view sees art as a medium to awaken and strengthen people. Through this lens, art becomes a tool for meaningful social movement.

Storytelling is a primary method for preserving cultural identity and passing on wisdom.

In many communities, villagers gather at a common meeting place at the end of the day. Storytellers use specific commands to manage the performance. They say "Ugai Itha" to gain the audience's attention and begin. They use "Rukirika" to signal that the tale has ended. Stories are often divided into two main types: animal tales and day-to-day tales. Animal tales are generally for entertainment but still teach important morals.

These often feature a clever Hare as a trickster and a Hyena as a victim. Day-to-day tales are more serious and explain the struggles of everyday life. They may cover topics like famine, courtship, or family matters.

Religion and folklore are also deeply intertwined with the social fabric of the continent. Like many civilizations, various African cultures share flood myths. One myth from Central African foragers describes a Chameleon who cuts open a tree trunk. This action releases water that causes a great flood across the land. In Ethiopia, Christianity and Islam form the core of the culture. These religions influence many aspects of life, including dietary customs and rituals.

History has significantly shaped the current state of African cultural identity. During the Roman colonization of North Africa, provinces like Tripolitania became major food producers. This occupation lasted for 400 years and generated great wealth. Later, during European colonialism, many people faced pressure to abandon their traditions. The French, for example, sometimes required people to adopt French ways to be accepted. This led to a period where some people denied their traditional culture. However, a rise in African nationalism eventually led to a cultural recovery.

Today, many governments support national dance groups, music groups, and museums to protect this heritage.

It is important to recognize that African culture is not a single, monolithic identity. A BBC report noted that many people find the label "black" too simplistic. Such a label can deny the many cultural differences within a diverse community. Furthermore, African culture is distinct from Black culture in the United States. The latter originated from African Americans who were stripped of much of their original culture during enslavement.

Understanding the specific sub-communities helps prevent their heritage from being boxed into simple labels. A significant challenge remains, as 90% to 95% of Africa's cultural heritage is held in museums outside of the continent.
