Long ago, the Sahara Desert acted like a big wall.

The harsh, dry climate made it hard to travel across. This separated the north from the south for a long time. However, the Nile River provided a way to move through the desert. There were also times in the past when the Sahara was much wetter. During these "wet phases," larger lakes and more rivers existed. This allowed plants, animals, and people to move more easily.

Humans have a very deep history in this region.

Sub-Saharan Africa is a vast geographical designation. It refers to the regions of the African continent located south of the Sahara Desert.

This area is not a single political entity. Instead, it is a grouping of several distinct regions. These include West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa, and Southern Africa.

The term is often used as a counterpart to North Africa. North Africa is frequently grouped with the Middle East in the MENA region. Because the Sahara Desert creates a massive natural barrier, the two areas have often been studied separately.

The exact number of countries in this region can change. This is because different international organizations use different rules for their statistics. For example, the United Nations Development Programme includes 46 countries. Other organizations, such as the World Bank or the WHO, may include up to 48 countries. The African Union uses a different system entirely. It recognizes all 55 member states on the continent by dividing them into five standard regions. This shows that "sub-Saharan Africa" is a non-standardized term used for statistical convenience.

Climate and ecology vary greatly across this massive expanse. In the north, the Sahel forms a hot, semi-arid belt. This belt sits at a latitude between 10° and 15° N. South of the Sahel, wide savannas stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to the Ethiopian Highlands. Further south, the tropical rainforests of Equatorial Africa create a humid environment.

These forests cover much of Central Africa, specifically the Congo region. In East Africa, the equatorial zone features unique ecosystems like the Serengeti. The region also contains Afromontane forests in high mountain ranges.

In the south, the landscape transitions to the miombo woodland belt. This belt spans from Angola to Tanzania. The southern tip features the Cape Floristic Region, which contains diverse temperate forests and shrublands.

Geological and climatic history has shaped how life moves through Africa. Since roughly 3900 BCE, the harsh Sahara has acted as a barrier. However, the Nile River has provided a path through this desert. Navigation on the Nile was sometimes blocked by cataracts or the Sudd. Scientists also study "pluvial periods," which were phases when the Sahara was much wetter. During these wet phases, larger lakes and rivers existed. The Sahara pump theory suggests these changes helped flora and fauna move into Eurasia.

The human history of this region is incredibly deep. Between 10 million and 5 million years ago, early hominids lived in these areas. They lived in both forests and open savannas. By 3 million years ago, several australopithecine species lived in Southern, East, and Central Africa. These early ancestors were tool users. Around 2.3 million BCE, primitive stone tools were used to scavenge animal carcasses.

Later, the species Homo erectus appeared. They developed more complex Acheulean stone tool technology. Homo erectus also mastered the use of fire. They were the first hominids to leave Africa to colonize the Old World.

Scholars have often criticized the term "sub-Saharan Africa." Some argue it is a colonial or racist construction. Critics say it was intended to separate the continent into "white" north and "black" south. This old taxonomy overlooks common genetic links and regional diversity. For instance, the E haplogroup shows connections between males in western Africa and Egypt. This contradicts the idea of two completely separate macro-populations. Additionally, many scholars point to the historical trade and cultural connections between North, West, and East Africa.

The region is also known for its incredible biodiversity. Countries like South Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are considered megadiverse. This means they host a huge variety of different living species. From the deserts of the Kalahari to the mountains of Ethiopia, the region remains a complex and connected part of the world.
