These include South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. Some people also include Madagascar in this group. However, Madagascar has its own unique culture and language.

Eventually, it reaches the Indian Ocean on the Mozambique coast. Along this journey, the river creates Victoria Falls. 
The region is also famous for its massive mineral wealth. Southern Africa contains the world's largest resources of platinum and platinum group elements. It also holds large amounts of chromium, vanadium, and cobalt. Other valuable minerals include gold, diamonds, copper, and uranium. 
Human history in this region goes back hundreds of thousands of years. Scientists believe modern humans emerged in Africa between 350,000 and 260,000 years ago. The San people are among the oldest inhabitants of the area. 
Other powerful kingdoms also shaped the history of the land. The Kingdom of Mutapa and the Kingdom of Butua emerged during the decline of Great Zimbabwe. Later, the Rozwi Empire became a powerful Shona state. In the 19th century, the Zulu Kingdom rose under the leader Shaka. This kingdom covered much of present-day KwaZulu-Natal. During this time, Boer settlers also arrived in the region. This led to conflicts, such as the Battle of Blood River in 1838.
Today, Southern Africa has a more developed economy and infrastructure than other African regions. It has strong manufacturing and mining sectors. However, the region still faces many serious challenges. Many areas struggle with poverty, crime, and inequality. The region also deals with the epidemic of HIV/AIDS. In fact, Eswatini, Lesotho, Botswana, South Africa, and Namibia have the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world.
