While it began as a way for combat and self-defense, it has changed over time. Today, most people use it as a way to exercise or relax. Some people even compete in tai chi as a sport. In these competitions, judges look at how people perform their forms. They also watch skills like pushing hands and free sparring. This art is a way to find balance in both the body and the mind.

Practicing tai chi involves following specific sequences of movement called forms.

These moves are often slow and flowing. Many people call this "meditation in motion" because it helps them focus. To do the moves correctly, a person must keep their body aligned. They use their breath to match their physical motions. This helps them stay relaxed instead of having tight muscles. Some people also practice with weapons like a straight sword or a long wooden staff.

The earliest well-documented practices happened during the Ming-Qing transition. This took place in places like Chen Village and Zhabao Village in Henan. These areas were on the North China Plain. During this time, many different martial arts grew there due to many changes in the land. Most modern styles come from five main traditional schools. These are the Chen, Yang, Wu, and Sun schools.

In the early 1900s, famous teachers helped make tai chi more common.

People like Yang Chengfu and Sun Lutang promoted it for its health benefits. They helped turn it into a standard practice for many people. In 2020, tai chi reached a big milestone. It was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It uses the idea of Yin and Yang to show balance.

Yin represents softness, while Yang represents hardness. A key rule in tai chi is that softness can overcome hardness. Instead of pushing back with direct force, a person learns to yield. This allows them to move with the flow of energy. It is a way to find naturalness by relaxing the mind and body.
