Baguazhang

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Baguazhang is a special kind of Chinese martial art. Its name means "eight trigram palm." This name comes from the bagua, which are symbols used in the Yijing. This book is a very important part of Taoism. Baguazhang is known as an internal practice, or neijia. This means it focuses on how the body moves from the inside. It is one of the three main arts in the Wudang school. The other two are tai chi and xingyiquan.

To learn this art, students practice a method called circle walking. They call this "turning the circle." A beginner might start with a circle six to twelve feet wide. Students walk along the edge of this circle in low stances. They always face the center of the circle. As they walk, they change directions and perform different moves. This training helps them learn how to move their bodies correctly. It also teaches them how to be flexible and strong.

A man named Dong Haichuan is credited with creating this formal art. He lived during the early 19th century in rural China. Some say he learned from Buddhist masters in the mountains. Other people believe his teachers were Taoist masters. This is because the art uses ideas like yin and yang. Dong Haichuan once worked as a servant in the Imperial Palace. He was so good at fighting that he became a bodyguard for the emperor. He eventually taught many students in Beijing.

Many famous students of Dong Haichuan started their own styles. These styles have different ways of using the palms. For example, the Yin style is known for "threading" the palms. The Cheng style is good at "pushing" with the palms. Other styles use different moves, like the "hammer" palms of the Ma style. Some students even used these skills during the Boxer Rebellion. Today, people practice many styles like Yin, Cheng, and Liang. There are even smaller sub-styles, such as the Gao or Sun styles.

Practitioners use many different tools and weapons in Baguazhang. They can use a staff, a spear, or even a cane. Some use special knives, like crescent-shaped deer horn knives. They also use very large weapons like the bagua sword. The art teaches people how to move in a smooth, coiling way. This helps them dodge attackers or move behind them. You might even see these moves in movies or shows. For example, it inspired airbending in the show Avatar: The Last Airbender.
