sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Baguazhang is a Chinese martial art. Its name means "eight trigram palm." This name comes from old ideas in Taoism. A man named Dong Haichuan is said to have made this art a formal way to fight. He may have learned it from masters in the mountains. He even worked as a bodyguard for an emperor!

People train by walking in a circle. This is called "turning the circle." Students walk around the edge of a circle. They stay in low stances. This training helps them move in smooth ways. It helps them flow and dodge attackers. They can move behind a person to stay safe.

There are many different styles. The Yin style uses quick strikes. The Cheng style uses wrestling and locks. Some styles use special tools. These include knives, a staff, or a spear. They even use very large swords. Practitioners use their whole body to move. They draw power from their center. This art is used in many movies and shows today.
