It is a way to defend yourself while also protecting the attacker from injury. The name comes from three Japanese characters. The first means harmony or unifying. The second means energy or spirit. The third means way or path.

People often call it "the way of unifying life energy." It is a practice built on peace and reconciliation. Instead of using violence, practitioners try to overcome themselves. This means working on their own spirit and character.

In a practice session, students use specific movements to manage an attack.

They use things like throws and joint locks. They also learn to use weapons like the spear, the short staff, and the sword.

To defend themselves, they use principles like entering and breathing control. They also use a triangular principle. These movements help them redirect the momentum of an opponent. The goal is to control the action with very little effort. This is done by understanding the rhythm and intent of the attacker.

Morihei Ueshiba created Aikido in the 20th century.

He was often called "Great Teacher" by his students. He studied many older martial arts first. He learned Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu from Takeda Sōkaku. He also studied judo with Jigoro Kano.

Ueshiba was also influenced by a religion called Ōmoto-kyō. He met its leader, Onisaburo Deguchi, in 1919.

This meeting helped shape his ideas about compassion. He wanted his art to show love even to those who cause harm.

Today, Aikido is practiced in around 140 countries.

It has many different styles. Some styles are called Yoshinkan or Shodokan. Others include Aikikai, Renshinkai, and Iwama Ryu.

The Aikikai Foundation is the largest organization. It is still run by the Ueshiba family. Many styles were started by the senior students of the founder. These students had different ways of teaching based on when they studied. Even with these differences, most styles still care about the well-being of the attacker.

Aikido spread across the world starting in the 1950s.

Minoru Mochizuki showed the art in France in 1951. Later, Koichi Tohei helped introduce it to Hawaii.

The art is similar to other Japanese traditions. You can see similar ideas in calligraphy, flower arranging, and tea ceremonies. Training is called keiko. It involves both physical and mental work. Students learn to fall safely through rolling. This helps them prepare for the many throws they will practice.
