He is best known as the founder of Aikido. Many people call him the "Great Teacher" because of his skill. He was born in 1883 in a village called Nishinotani. His father was a wealthy farmer and a local leader.

As a young child, Ueshiba was often weak and sickly. His father wanted him to grow strong through swimming and sumo wrestling. This early training helped prepare him for a life of movement.

Ueshiba spent many years learning different ways to fight. He studied several styles, including a style called Kitō-ryū jujutsu. In 1915, he met a master named Takeda Sōkaku. Takeda taught him a difficult art called Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu. Ueshiba was a very dedicated student to this teacher. He even built a training hall, or dojo, at his own home. He worked hard to master these complex movements and skills.

His life was full of big changes and travels. In 1910, he moved to the northern island of Hokkaido. He helped lead a group of eighty-five pioneers to start a new village. This was a hard job because of bad weather and poor soil. Later, he joined a religious group called Ōmoto-kyō in Ayabe. In 1924, he even went on an expedition to Mongolia. These experiences shaped how he saw the world and his art.

In 1925, Ueshiba had a very important spiritual experience. He said a golden spirit rose from the ground and changed him.

After this, his martial arts became much gentler. He began to focus on a life force called ki. He moved to Tokyo in 1926 to start a famous dojo. This place became the Aikikai Hombu Dojo for many students. He taught people in many places, including military academies.

Ueshiba spent his later years sharing his art with the world.

After World War II, he retired to a place called Iwama. He continued to train and teach from his dojo there. He worked hard to spread Aikido to many different countries. He passed away from liver cancer in 1969. Today, his students still teach Aikido to people everywhere.
