Tesio was born in Turin in 1869. He lost his parents when he was only six years old. Later, he earned a degree from the University of Florence. He also served in the Italian Army during World War I.

In 1898, Tesio and his wife Lydia bought a silk worm farm. They removed the mulberry trees to build something new. They created the Dormello Stud near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. This farm covered 19 hectares of land. It had special houses and stalls for the horses. Tesio built many different farms in the area. Some were for pregnant mares. Others were for young horses or horses in training. One farm even had a huge dirt track in a forest.

Tesio did not just breed horses. He also owned and trained them. He was very successful in big races. He trained 22 winners of the Derby Italiano. He bred many famous champions like Nearco and Ribot. Lydia Tesio was a very important partner. She helped with the business side of the farm. She even brought in a new partner in 1932. Lydia kept all the important records until 1942. Tesio wrote books about his work with horses. One book was called Puro-Sangue - Animale da Esperimento. Another book was titled Breeding the Racehorse. These books helped others learn about his methods.
