Piero Sraffa was a very important thinker in the study of economics. Economics is the study of how people use money and goods. He was born in Turin, Italy, in 1898 to a wealthy Jewish family. His father, Angelo Sraffa, was a professor of law. Piero grew up traveling to different universities with his father. During these years, he met many people who shaped his life. One of these people was Antonio Gramsci, a leader of the Communist Party of Italy. They became very close friends because they shared similar political views.

Sraffa's life changed because of the difficult times in Italy. A group called the fascists took power in Italy. This group was very harsh toward people who disagreed with them. Sraffa's father was even threatened by the leader, Mussolini. Sraffa also helped his friend Gramsci when he was sent to prison. Sraffa sent him books, pens, and paper so he could write. These items helped Gramsci write his famous Prison Notebooks. These events showed how much Sraffa cared about his friends and his beliefs.

In 1927, Sraffa moved to England to live in Cambridge. A famous economist named John Maynard Keynes invited him to the University of Cambridge. This move was a major turning point for his career. Sraffa lived in Cambridge for the rest of his life. He worked as a lecturer and later as a librarian. While there, he joined a group called the cafeteria group. This was an informal club where smart people met to talk about big ideas.

Sraffa spent much of his time thinking about how prices are set. He wrote a very important book called Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities. This book was finally published in 1960. In his work, he looked at how the cost of making things affects their price. He studied how supply and demand work together in a market. He also looked at how the scarcity of land affects the economy. His ideas helped start a new way of thinking called the neo-Ricardian school.

Sraffa's work connects to how we understand the world today. He studied how big companies and small firms act differently. He also talked about how much it costs to produce goods in large amounts. He met many other great thinkers like Joan Robinson and Nicholas Kaldor. These people also left lasting marks on the study of economics. By looking at the math of production, Sraffa helped us see the logic behind trade. His life shows how one person's ideas can change a whole field of study.
