She spent her life studying how money and jobs work. She was a major part of the "Cambridge School" of thinkers. This group helped shape how people understand economics in the 20th century. Robinson was known for being a very brilliant person. She also had very strong views on many topics. Her work helped explain how economies grow and change over time.

One of her most important ideas was a new word. In 1933, she created the term "monopsony."

This word describes a market where there is only one buyer. It is often used to talk about workers and employers. For example, it can explain why a single boss might pay workers less. She used this idea to talk about the pay gap between men and women. Even today, courts use her monopsony theory to make big decisions.

Joan grew up in Surrey and was born in 1903.

She studied at Girton College in Cambridge. She finished her studies in 1925. However, Cambridge did not give degrees to women until 1948. After she married Austin Robinson in 1926, she moved to India. This trip was a big part of her life. It made her interested in how developing nations work. She later became a professor at Cambridge in 1965.

Robinson wrote many books that people still read.

Her book "The Accumulation of Capital" came out in 1956. She also wrote about the economy in China. She visited China many times to learn about its ways. She even wrote about the "Korean Miracle" in North Korea. She was a very busy person who worked on many committees. During World War II, she helped the British government with research. She was the only woman on one special building committee.

Many people were influenced by her great mind.

Two of her students even won the Nobel Prize in Economics. These students were Amartya Sen and Joseph Stiglitz. Even though she was very famous, she never won a Nobel Prize herself. Some people think this was because of her political ideas. Others think it was because she was a woman. Today, a blue plaque in London honors her life.
