Piero Sraffa was a famous thinker. He was born in Italy in 1898. His father was a law professor. Piero studied many subjects. He met a leader named Antonio Gramsci. They became close friends. Later, Italy had a hard time under a group called the fascists. This group was unfair to many people. Sraffa helped his friend Gramsci while he was in prison. He sent him pens and paper to write.

In 1927, Sraffa moved to England. He went to the University of Cambridge. A wise man named John Maynard Keynes invited him there. Sraffa lived in Cambridge for the rest of his life. He met many smart people there. They often met to talk about big ideas.

Sraffa wrote about how prices are set. He looked at how much it costs to make goods. He wrote a big book called Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities. This book came out in 1960. His work helped start a new way of thinking about economics. People still study his ideas today.
