Arthur Cecil Pigou was a famous English economist. He was born in 1877. He spent much of his life at Cambridge University. There, he was a teacher and a leader. He taught many people how to study money and trade. Many of his students became great experts too.

Pigou studied how choices affect all of society. He focused on welfare economics. This is the study of how decisions help a whole group. He is well known for his idea of an "externality." This is a cost or benefit that affects others. For example, a factory might cause harm to a neighbor. Pigou said a tax could help fix these problems. This is often called a Pigovian tax.

He also wrote about jobs. He studied why people might not have work. He looked at how wages affect the economy. He even helped a famous economist named John Maynard Keynes.

Outside of school, Pigou loved the outdoors. He enjoyed climbing mountains with his friends. He lived a long life and died in 1959. His big ideas still help us solve problems today.
