Ueshiba studied many different fighting styles. He learned a style called Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu. He studied with a master named Takeda Sōkaku. Later, Ueshiba had a big spiritual experience. He said a golden spirit changed his body. After this, his martial arts became much gentler. He focused on a force called ki. This is a kind of spirit or life power.

He used this new way to start Aikido. He set up a training hall called a dojo in Tokyo. He taught many people, even in military schools. After World War II, he moved to a place called Iwama. He worked hard to spread Aikido to other countries.
