The name means "yielding art." This means you use an opponent's force against them. You do not meet force with force. Instead, you use their own power to win.

Long ago, samurai used these skills on the battlefield.

Many warriors wore heavy armor. Hitting armor with a punch did not work well. Because of this, they learned to use pins and throws. They also used joint locks to control an enemy. Some schools even taught the use of small weapons. These could be a knife or a weighted chain.

As times changed, the art changed too. During the Edo period, people stopped wearing armor. They began to fight in normal street clothes. This led to new moves like strikes to certain parts of the body.

Later, many styles grew into modern sports. A man named Kanō Jigorō used jujutsu to help start judo. Today, many other sports like Brazilian jiu-jitsu also come from these old ways. Police around the world still use these skills to help keep people safe.
