Shaolin kung fu is a very famous way of moving. It is also called Shaolin Wushu or Shaolin quan. This style combines martial arts with Chan philosophy and Buddhist beliefs. Many people in China believe it is the best style under heaven. Some even say all other martial arts started at Shaolin. It is a way to train both the body and the mind.

Learning these skills involves many different steps. Students practice body exercises to gain power, speed, and balance. In old stories, these moves are called the 72 arts. To learn combat, students often work with a partner. One person attacks while the other person defends or blocks. They might also use two-person forms to practice moves in a sequence. This helps them remember the exact way to move for many years.

The history of this art is very long. The Shaolin Temple was built in 495 AD. It sits among the Song mountains in Henan, China. A monk named Batuo was the first to preach there. Later, monks like Sengchou showed great skill with a tin staff. Some legends say a man named Bodhidharma started these arts. However, many scholars say those stories are just old legends from the 17th century.

Shaolin monks have been part of big events for a long time. In the year 621, they helped in the Battle of Hulao. They fought to help a leader named Li Shimin. Later, during the Ming dynasty, many experts came to study them. A man named Yu Dayou visited the temple around 1560. He learned staff moves and then taught them to other monks. This helped create the Five Tigers Interception style.

Monks also fought to protect people from pirates. In 1553, a monk named Tianyuan led 120 monks in a fight. They won a big victory at Wengjiagang. This victory happened in the Huangpu River delta. The monks used the staff as their main weapon. Today, people still look to Shaolin to learn about strength and discipline. It connects ancient history to the way people move today.
