Its name can be translated as "singing spring boxing." People value this art because it focuses on being very efficient. It is a system for close-quarters self-defense. This means it is designed for when people are standing very near each other. Practitioners try to stay on their own centerline to stay safe. They also use an opponent's own force to help them defend.

Learning the moves involves many different steps and tools. Students first practice empty hand forms to build their skills. One very important form is called Siu nim tau. This form is the foundation for everything else a student learns. They also practice with special weapons like the Dragon pole.

They may also use Butterfly swords for training. Another way to practice is by using a wooden dummy.

The exact history of Wing Chun is a bit of a mystery. Many people believe it grew from Southern Chinese martial arts. Because it was often taught orally, there are no written records from the very beginning. Some stories say the name comes from a woman named Yim Wing-chun. Other stories say the name was a secret code used by revolutionaries. This secrecy helped protect the art during difficult times in China. Because of these different stories, there are at least eight distinct lineages today.

One of the most famous teachers was a man named Ip Man. He brought Wing Chun to Hong Kong in 1949. Later, he helped spread the art to the rest of the world. His most famous student was the legendary Bruce Lee. In 1967, Ip Man and his students started the Ving Tsun Athletic Association. This group helped more people around the globe learn the style. Today, the Ip Man and Yuen Kay-shan lineages are the most common.

You might recognize Wing Chun from movies or video games. The Ip Man film series starring Donnie Yen made it very popular. It has even appeared in the video game Tekken 7. Even though there are many different spellings, like Ving Tsun or Yong Chun, the art is the same. The way a name is spelled can even tell you which family a teacher belongs to. It is a living tradition that connects people across many different countries.
