It was created by the martial artist Bruce Lee. He wanted a way to defend himself in real life. He did not like old styles that used set patterns. He thought real fights were always changing and moving. This style is called a hybrid martial art. This means it mixes many different styles together. It uses moves from Wing Chun and boxing. It also uses ideas from fencing, taekwondo, and jujutsu. Many people believe it helped start mixed martial arts (MMA).

Learning Jeet Kune Do involves following certain rules. One big idea is called interception. This means you hit your opponent while they are moving toward you. You can also use a move called simultaneous parrying and punching. This is when you block an attack and hit back at the same time. Students also learn about the four combat ranges. These ranges are kicking, punching, trapping, and grappling.

Training in all four ranges helps a person become a total martial artist. This is different from many other styles that only focus on one or two ranges.

Bruce Lee started his journey in Hong Kong. He was a student of a famous teacher named Ip Man. Around 1964, Lee had a duel with a man named Wong Jack-man. This fight made Lee want to find a new way to practice. He did not like how rigid some martial arts were. In 1965, he shared his basic ideas in a press interview. He did not want to give his ideas a name at first. Finally, in 1967, he chose the name Jeet Kune Do. Some people also call his philosophy Jun Fan Gung Fu.

There are many important rules to follow in this art. One rule is to use the centerline. This is an imaginary line running down the middle of your body. You try to control your own line and your opponent's line.

Another rule is to use the least amount of movement. This is called economy of motion. It means you strike with the least distance and energy possible. Lee also taught the "5 Ways of Attack." These include things like the Single Direct Attack and the Attack By Combinations. These help students organize how they fight.

Bruce Lee used a famous idea to explain his way of thinking. He said to "be like water." Water is very flexible and can change its shape. It can flow around a tiny pebble or crash through a hard rock.

He wanted fighters to be just as flexible. He told students to "absorb what is useful" and leave the rest. After Lee died, his students formed different groups. Some follow the original branch to teach exactly what he taught. Others follow the Jeet Kune Do Concepts branch. They use his ideas to keep evolving and learning new things.
