Jeet Kune Do

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Jeet Kune Do, often abbreviated as JKD, is a hybrid martial art. It was conceived and practiced by the famous martial artist Bruce Lee. Unlike many traditional styles, JKD focuses on the principle of counterattacking. The goal is to impede an opponent's offense by intercepting their movements. This makes it an eclectic system. It draws heavy influence from many different disciplines. These include Wing Chun, Tai Chi, taekwondo, boxing, fencing, and jujutsu.

Lee wanted JKD to have practical applications in real life. He avoided the traditional routines and metaphysics found in conventional martial arts. Instead, he focused on principles for quick decision-making. These principles aim to improve both mental and physical health. Lee based JKD on his own experiences in unarmed fighting and self-defense. He also integrated his personal philosophies. These included Zen Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Because Lee did not formally codify the system before his death, practitioners must rely on their own interpretations of his philosophy.

The mechanism of JKD relies on several core combat truths. One major concept is the principle of interception. Lee believed that an opponent must move toward you to attack. This movement provides a chance to intercept the attack. Interception also applies to non-verbal telegraphs. These are subtle movements an opponent makes without realizing it. Another key mechanism is simultaneous parrying and punching. This involves deflecting an attack and delivering a counterattack at the same time. This is more effective than blocking and then striking in a sequence.

JKD practitioners organize their offensive repertoire through the "5 Ways of Attack." These categories help a student manage their fighting skills. The first is the Single Angular Attack (SAA) and its converse, the Single Direct Attack (SDA). Next are Hand Immobilization Attacks (HIA) and Foot Immobilization attacks. These use trapping to limit an opponent's function with an appendage. The third is the Progressive Indirect Attack (PIA). This involves attacking one part of the body to create an opening for another. The fourth is the Attack By Combinations (ABC), which uses rapid volume to overcome an opponent. Finally, there is the Attack By Drawing (ABD), which uses positioning to create an opening for a counterattack.

Training in JKD requires mastering the four combat ranges. These ranges are kicking, punching, trapping, and grappling. Lee believed that training in all four ranges equally made a person a "total" martial artist. Most traditional systems only specialize in one or two ranges. This distinction is very similar to the phases of combat found in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

Historically, Lee's journey began in Hong Kong. He was a student of the Wing Chun Grandmaster Ip Man. Around 1964, Lee had a duel with Wong Jack-man. This event led him to disavow the rigidity of systematized martial arts. He began researching new ways to refine his practice. In 1965, he outlined his concepts in a press interview. He resisted naming his school of thought at first. He finally chose the name Jeet Kune Do in 1967. His philosophy is also known as Jun Fan Gung Fu.

Lee used the metaphor of water to explain his philosophy. He believed a martial system should be as flexible as water. Water can flow around a pebble or crash through a rock. It can be seen through or it can obscure things. He taught students to "absorb what is useful; disregard that which is useless." This leads to the concept of economy of motion. This is the technique of "least action." It means striking with the least distance, time, and energy possible.

There are two main branches of JKD today. The Original or Jun Fan branch seeks to teach exactly what Lee taught. Proponents like Taky Kimura and Ted Wong follow this path. They view it as a "style without style." The Jeet Kune Do Concepts branch focuses on individual expression. Proponents like Dan Inosanto use JKD as a lens to interpret other systems. They incorporate elements like grappling and Kali to evolve the art. This branch views JKD as a dynamic, ongoing evolution rather than a static set of rules.
