arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Kung fu, or quanfa, refers to a wide range of Chinese martial arts. In China, the term has an even broader meaning. It describes any skill or study requiring great patience and energy. To achieve kung fu means to master a discipline through hard work. This could be a martial art or even a tea ceremony. The gongfu tea ceremony is a perfect example of this discipline. People use the term to honor the time spent perfecting a craft.

Many distinct styles of kung fu exist today. Each form uses its own unique principles and specific techniques. Shaolin kung fu is a very famous style. Wing Chun is another well-known form of practice. Tai chi is a style often practiced for health and balance. Most kung fu forms are recognized for their quickness. They are also known for using clever trickery in movement. These styles are now practiced by people all over the world.

There is a fascinating theory about the origins of kung fu. Some historians suggest deep connections to ancient Indian martial traditions. One such system is Kalaripayattu, which is one of the oldest fighting systems. The central figure in this theory is the monk Bodhidharma. He likely traveled from the Pallava dynasty in South India to China. This journey may have occurred around the 5th or 6th century CE. In Chinese records, he is often called Damo. He arrived at the Shaolin Monastery to spread Chan Buddhism.

Legend says Bodhidharma introduced physical training to the monks. These exercises may have been precursors to Shaolin martial arts. His methods included dynamic movements and controlled breathing. He also used meditative postures to strengthen the body and mind. These exercises helped monks who struggled with long meditation hours. Some versions claim he taught the Eighteen Hands of Lohan. This set of moves reportedly became the basis for Shaolin kung fu. However, modern scholars note that no historical evidence proves this connection.

Scholars also study the concept of qi, or internal energy. Qi is a vital force within the human body. It is also a fundamental substance in the natural world. This concept is rooted in indigenous Chinese thought. It appeared in Taoism and Confucianism long before Buddhism arrived. Taoist texts focus on cultivating qi through breathing and meditation. Confucian thinkers saw qi as a moral and spiritual energy. This energy is nourished through righteous living and discipline.

History shows that many popular stories about kung fu are myths. A text called the Yijin Jing appeared in the 17th century. This text linked Bodhidharma to martial arts training. However, historians like Tang Hao proved it was a Ming-dynasty fabrication. The idea of Bodhidharma as a founder likely came from a novel. This novel, The Travels of Lao Ts'an, was written between 1904 and 1907. Research shows Shaolin practices developed independently during the Ming dynasty. Historical texts from before the 19th century do not mention Bodhidharma.

Kung fu has a massive influence on global popular culture. It is a central theme in the wuxia genre of fiction. Wuxia stories focus on chivalry and a martial arts society called Wulin. These stories can be traced back to the 2nd or 3rd centuries BCE. Martial arts also appear in Chinese opera, such as Beijing opera. In the 1970s, Bruce Lee helped kung fu films become a global hit. Actors like Jackie Chan and Jet Li brought new styles to cinema. Some films use special effects called "wire-fu" to show movement.

Even the birth of hip-hop was influenced by these traditions. In the 1970s, urban youth in New York watched kung fu movies. Pioneers like DJ Kool Herc were part of this era. A new dance called b-boying or breakdancing emerged from this culture. Dancers used improvised acrobatic moves inspired by kung fu fights. They used moves like the low leg sweep or "up rocking." Dancers even held battles to test their creativity and skill. These battles often felt like scenes from a kung fu movie.
