His influence reaches across Asia and Hollywood. He was even named one of the 100 most influential people by Time magazine in 2010.

Li's journey began with rigorous training in wushu, a Chinese martial art. At age eight, his talent was noticed at the Beijing Sports and Exercise School. Coaches Li Junfeng and Wu Bin helped him develop his skills. Wu Bin even provided food to help Li's family and boost his protein intake. At age eleven, Li joined the 1974 China national wushu team. This team traveled to the United States during the period of Ping-pong diplomacy. They performed in cities like New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. During a visit to President Richard Nixon, Li famously said he wanted to defend his one billion Chinese countrymen.

Li mastered many complex styles of wushu. These included changquan and fanziquan. He also studied arts like baguazhang, taijiquan, and xingyiquan. He practiced various combat styles such as zuiquan, or "drunken fist." He also trained in eagle claw and praying mantis fist. His skills extended to weapons like the gunshu, daoshu, and jianshu. He even practiced with the sanjiegun, which is a three-section staff. Between 1975 and 1979, he was the national all-around champion four times. However, a knee injury forced him to retire from competitive wushu at age eighteen.

His transition to acting began in 1982 with the film Shaolin Temple. This movie was a massive success and broke box office records in China. He became a major star through the Once Upon a Time in China series from 1991 to 1993. In these films, he portrayed the legendary folk hero Wong Fei-hung. His stage name, "Jet Li," was created by a publicity company in the Philippines. They felt his real name was difficult to pronounce. They chose "Jet" because it matched his speed and grace. This nickname was also compared to the quick takeoff of a jet aircraft.

Li eventually expanded his career into Hollywood. He made his American debut as a villain in Lethal Weapon 4 in 1998. This was followed by his first Hollywood leading role in Romeo Must Die in 2000. He has appeared in many international productions, such as Kiss of the Dragon and Unleashed. In 2002, he starred in the martial arts epic Hero. This film was a major critical and commercial success. It became the highest-grossing Chinese motion picture at that time. In 2008, he collaborated with fellow star Jackie Chan in The Forbidden Kingdom.

He consistently ranked highly on the Forbes China Celebrity 100 list for many years. For example, he was ranked 3rd in 2008 and 6th in 2009. His acting range includes serious dramas like The Warlords. This role earned him the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor. In 2023, his lifelong dedication was honored when he was inducted into the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame.

In addition to entertainment, Li is dedicated to social causes. He founded the One Foundation in 2007. By 2011, it was registered as the first private charitable fundraising organization in China. He also co-founded Taiji Zen. This is an online health program that teaches meditation and tai chi. Through these efforts, Li connects his martial arts discipline to global wellness and charity. He continues to explore films that deal with religious and philosophical issues.
