He is famous for his explosive stunt work and high-energy action choreography. His performances helped establish the Thai action genre on a global scale. Jaa is credited with popularizing several Thai combat systems in international cinema. These include Muay Thai and the ancient art of Muay Boran. He is widely considered one of the greatest martial arts stars in film history. His movies have earned more than $2.7 billion at the worldwide box office.

Jaa's movement style relies on extreme acrobatics and rapid, dance-like motions. He often performs these difficult stunts without using mechanical assistance or computer-generated effects. This approach creates a sense of realism that audiences find very impressive. He has mastered many different fighting disciplines to enhance his film roles. These include Taekwondo, Krabi-Krabong, Judo, Aikido, Silat, and Jiu-Jitsu. In 2005, he and filmmaker Panna Rittikrai even developed a new style called "Muay Kotchasaan." This specific fighting style is designed to imitate the movements of elephants.

Jaa's journey toward stardom began in the rural Surin Province. He was born Tatchakorn Yeerum on February 5, 1976. As a young boy, he watched films by legends like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan at temple fairs. He found their heroic movements so beautiful that he wanted to replicate them. He practiced these martial arts techniques in his father's rice paddy. At age ten, he began formal training in Muay Thai at his local temple. He eventually graduated from the Maha Sarakham College of Physical Education.

Before becoming a leading man, Jaa spent 14 years working as a professional stuntman. He worked for the group Muay Thai Stunt and appeared in many films by Panna Rittikrai. He even served as a stunt double for the actor Sammo Hung. During one commercial, Jaa had to grasp an elephant's tusks and somersault onto its back. His big break arrived in 2003 with the film Ong-Bak. He played the character Ting and won a Star Entertainment Award for the role. This film showcased his ability to perform intense stunts without digital help.

Following his success, Jaa starred in several major productions. In 2005, he played Kham in the film Tom-Yum-Goong. This movie featured the elephant-inspired combat style mentioned earlier. He later directed and starred in the sequels Ong Bak 2 in 2008 and Ong Bak 3 in 2010.

His career expanded into international English-speaking roles during the mid-2010s. He made his Hollywood debut in the blockbuster Furious 7 in 2015. He also appeared in XXX: Return of Xander Cage in 2017. These roles allowed him to work alongside major stars like Vin Diesel and Jason Statham.

Jaa's influence reaches across many different regions of the film industry. He made his Hong Kong debut in the film SPL II: A Time for Consequences in 2015. He has also worked in various Chinese-language productions, such as Detective Chinatown 3. His ability to work in different cinematic cultures has made him a global icon. Even legendary actors have noticed his talent. Jackie Chan once recommended Jaa to director Brett Ratner for the film Rush Hour 3. Chan described Jaa as the most well-rounded action star available.

Beyond his acting, Jaa is recognized for his technical contributions to film. He serves as an action choreographer and stunt coordinator. This means he plans the complex movements and fights seen on screen. His dedication to the craft earned him a place in the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame in 2017. While his career has been full of high-speed action, he has also faced personal challenges. In early 2026, reports stated he had been diagnosed with stage 3 gallbladder cancer. Despite this, his legacy in martial arts cinema remains incredibly strong.
