Born in Beijing on December 11, 1966, his Chinese name, Lai Ming, translates to "dawn." He is of Hakka ancestry, with family roots in Meixian. After migrating to Hong Kong at age four, he later moved to the United Kingdom. He attended Christ College at age 15 before returning to Hong Kong in 1984. Today, he is celebrated as one of the "Four Heavenly Kings" of Hong Kong pop music. This title signifies his massive influence on the region's entertainment industry.

Lai's professional journey began in a non-artistic role. He worked as a salesperson for a mobile phone company. His music career launched after he placed as second-runner-up in the 1986 New Talent Singing Awards. Following this, he received vocal coaching from Dai Si Zong. He signed with Capital Artists that same year but did not release albums for four years. Eventually, his teacher arranged a contract with Polygram, which later became Universal Music. His debut album, titled "Leon," achieved gold status.

In the music industry, Lai's style has undergone significant evolution. He initially focused on Cantopop and Mandarin music. However, working with producer Mark Lui allowed him to expand into popular electronic music. This transition included the creation of compelling music videos. His success is marked by numerous accolades. In 1990, he won the Jade Solid Gold Top 10 Awards and the RTHK Top 10 Gold Songs Awards. He also earned the "Most Popular Male Singer" award from TVB Jade Solid Gold in 1993 and 1995.

Lai has reached several historical milestones in the Asian music scene. In 1998, he became the first Hong Kong singer to enter the Top 10 K-pop charts with "After Loving You." He also represented the Greater China region by singing the 2002 FIFA World Cup theme song, "Charged Up." In 2004, he was the first Hong Kong singer to participate in the inaugural Asia Song Festival in South Korea. His musical versatility is evident in his collaborations. He has performed duets with artists such as Vivian Chow, Priscilla Chan, and Jacky Cheung. He even held a "Leon 4 in Love" concert in 2007, performing 18 newly arranged songs.

His acting career has seen both immense struggle and great triumph.

During his early days in Taiwan, he faced difficult filming conditions. While shooting a romantic serial, he had to squat during scenes to accommodate a shorter lead actress. Despite these challenges, the TVB series "The Breaking Point" brought him widespread fame. His film work has earned significant critical respect. He was nominated for Best Actor at the 16th Hong Kong Film Awards for "Comrades: Almost a Love Story." In 2002, he won Best Actor at the Golden Horse Awards for "Three: Going Home." He also won awards for Best Original Song for "Eighteen Springs" in 1997.

As a businessman, Lai has taken control of his own creative production. In 2004, he co-founded the record production company "A Music" with Peter Lam. This company released its first album, "Dawn," in September of that year. Lai has also demonstrated a commitment to his artistic vision over commercial convenience. In 2005, he chose to produce his Mandarin album "A Story" with producer Jonathan Lee. This decision required him to decline a lead role in a large-budget Taiwanese film called "Gui Si." This ability to manage his schedule and artistic direction defines his career as a multifaceted professional.

Beyond entertainment, Lai is a dedicated humanitarian. His involvement in charity began in the 1990s after his father was diagnosed with incurable rectal cancer. This personal experience led him to support the Cancer Research Foundation and UNICEF. In 1994, he became the first Hong Kong citizen appointed as an International UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. He has participated in seven charity concerts and various walkathons to raise funds. He has also visited Rwanda, Brazil, and Gansu to promote awareness for children. In 2003, the Hong Kong government awarded him the Medal of Honour for his community service.
