Although he had no formal dance training when he started, he enrolled in a training program at TVB. He eventually became known for a fast-dancing trend called "jing ge re wu." Many observers note that his energetic onstage movements were influenced by Michael Jackson. His skill was officially recognized when he won a prestigious top ten Hong Kong dance award. He is particularly famous for his live stage displays. In 2008, he performed at the Hong Kong AsiaWorld Arena using a massive revolving stage. This stage measured 10m by 9.44m and earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Before finding fame in entertainment, Kwok followed a very different path.

He graduated from St John's Co-education College in Hong Kong. His father owned a small gold retail store and wanted Kwok to learn the family business. After high school, Kwok worked as a junior staff member at King Fook Gold & Jewellery Co. Ltd. However, his path changed in 1984 when he was fired due to prolonged absenteeism. This absenteeism was caused by a foot muscle injury sustained while attempting the splits at a party. This event led him to join a dancer training program at TVB, which launched his career.

Kwok's rise to stardom involved both music and television. In 1985, a performance at a Miss Bodybuilding competition caught the attention of talent manager Florence Fung. This led to his entry into an actor training program at TVB in 1987. His popularity grew rapidly in Taiwan after he appeared in a Honda motorcycle commercial in 1990. He released several Mandopop albums in Taiwan, including the hit song "Loving You Forever." By 1991, he moved back to Hong Kong to produce Cantopop. During this period, his popularity reached a fever pitch, and he earned major awards like the Jade Solid Gold Top 10 Awards.

In addition to music, Kwok has established a respected career in film and television.

He won the Best Actor award again the following year at the 43rd Golden Horse Awards. This achievement made him only the second actor in history to win the award in consecutive years. In 2016, he also won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor for his role in Port of Call.

Outside of his professional work, Kwok has several intense interests. He is a well-known collector of supercars and a fan of motor racing. His collection includes many famous brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, and McLaren. He also owns several specific models, including the Ferrari F50 and the Lamborghini Aventador. In 2011, he expanded his interests by becoming a race-horse owner at the Hong Kong Jockey Club. He has owned several horses, including N288 Calling with Love and C180 Dancing Fighter. He is also a noted fan of Chinese hotpot.

Kwok's personal life has also been a subject of public interest. He married Moka Fang in 2017 in Hong Kong. The couple has three daughters together. Their first daughter, Chantelle, was born in 2017, followed by Charlotte in 2019. Kwok also announced the birth of a third daughter in October 2025. Throughout his career, he has also been recognized as a fashion icon. In the 1990s, he popularized a specific "center-split" hairstyle that many people imitated. His ability to influence both music and fashion has made him a lasting figure in Hong Kong culture.
