He is widely regarded as the first global Chinese film star. His work helped transform Hong Kong action cinema into a worldwide phenomenon. Lee is credited with popularizing martial arts films throughout the 1970s. He remains one of the most influential martial artists in cinema history. Time magazine even named him one of the 100 most important people of the 20th century.

Lee developed a unique martial arts philosophy called Jeet Kune Do.

This was a hybrid system, meaning it combined many different styles. He built this approach from his personal experiences in unarmed fighting. He also integrated elements from Zen Buddhist and Taoist philosophies. This created a new school of martial arts thought. Jeet Kune Do moved away from rigid, traditional forms. Instead, it focused on being practical and fluid during combat.

Lee's early life was shaped by his family and his surroundings. He was born Lee Jun-fan on November 27, 1940, in San Francisco.

His father, Lee Hoi-chuen, was a famous Cantonese opera singer. Because of this, Lee began acting as a child. His first role was as a baby in the film Golden Gate Girl. He chose the Chinese stage name "Lee the Little Dragon." This name reflected that he was born during the year and hour of the Dragon.

After his birth, his family returned to Hong Kong.

During his youth in Hong Kong, Lee began intensive martial arts training. He studied Wing Chun under the renowned teacher Ip Man. This was difficult because some students rejected Lee due to his mixed ancestry. However, Lee continued to train privately with Ip Man and others. He also practiced tai chi and trained in boxing. In 1958, he won a Hong Kong schools boxing tournament. He was also a skilled dancer and won a cha-cha championship. These diverse skills helped build his physical foundation.

In 1959, Lee moved to Seattle to continue his education. He enrolled at the University of Washington in 1961. While he studied drama, he also took classes in psychology and philosophy. These subjects became core interests for his life's work. During this time, he opened his first martial arts school. He called his method Jun Fan Gung Fu. He taught a very diverse group of students in Seattle. This was a significant change for Chinese martial arts instruction at that time.

Lee's film career brought him international fame through several major roles.

In the United States, he played Kato in the television series The Green Hornet. After returning to Hong Kong in 1971, he starred in The Big Boss. He also starred in Fist of Fury and directed The Way of the Dragon. His most famous work was the American-Hong Kong co-production Enter the Dragon. These films were commercially successful and changed how fights were choreographed. They moved cinema away from fantasy wuxia films toward realistic combat.

Tragically, Lee's career was cut short by his sudden death in 1973. He was only 32 years old when he died from brain edema. The exact causes of his death remain a matter of dispute. Despite this, his influence on popular culture has never faded. He remains an icon for the Chinese community and Asian Americans. His legacy is seen in modern combat sports like karate and mixed martial arts. He also continues to inspire films, comics, and video games worldwide.
