Lyrics

Lyrics are the words that make up a song. They usually consist of repeating parts like verses and choruses. A person who writes these words is called a lyricist. In much longer musical works, such as an opera, the words have a different name. They are called a libretto, which means "little book" in Italian. The person who writes these words is known as a librettist.

While many songs are sung, some styles use words differently. In rap and grime music, the lyrics are often spoken rhythmically. This is different from the melodic singing found in most other genres.

The meaning of lyrics can be expressed in several ways. Some lyrics are explicit, meaning the message is very clear. Other lyrics are implicit, where the meaning is suggested rather than stated directly. Some songs use abstract lyrics that might be hard to understand. In these cases, the focus is on the form, meter, and symmetry of the expression.

This means the way the words sound and fit together is more important than a literal meaning. Some lyrics also use "shifters." These are words like "I," "you," "my," or "our." The reference of a shifter changes depending on who is speaking, when, and where.

Lyrics can be classified into many distinct types. These categories include anthems, ballads, blues, and carols. Other types are folk songs, hymns, lieder, and lullabies. You might also find lyrics in marches, praise songs, rounds, or spirituals. The term "doggerel" is sometimes used for nursery rhymes. Some forms, like the ghazal, are sung but are considered primarily poetic. In Baroque music, the lyrics often functioned as prose. They used rhetorical sentences with an opening gesture, an amplification, and a close.

The history of the word "lyric" is tied to ancient instruments. The term derives from the Greek word for the lyre. In ancient Greece, lyric poetry was defined by being sung with a lyre or a cithara. This was distinct from formal epics that were chanted. It was also different from elegies accompanied by a flute. The word first appeared in English during the mid-16th century. It was used to describe the translations and sonnets of the Earl of Surrey.

In 1876, a dictionary used "lyric" as a singular term for poetry intended to be sung. By the 1930s, the plural "lyrics" began to appear. It became the standard usage for most writers by the 1950s.

Lyrics carry great significance in academic study and culture. Scholars analyze them as a form of social commentary. They often contain political, social, or economic themes. These messages can be communicated through metaphors or symbolism. Experts also study how lyrics create unity with the supporting music. For example, Christopher Ricks studied the poetry in Bob Dylan's lyrics. A 2025 study analyzed over 20,000 lyrics from the US Top 100 charts. This study found a significant increase in stress-related language over five decades. It also noted a decline in positive sentiment and lyrical complexity.

The digital age has changed how we access lyrics. This has created many challenges regarding copyright and royalties. Some websites offer lyrics without permission from the owners. In 2005, the U.S. Music Publishers Association launched a legal campaign against these sites. They argued that offering free lyrics without a license is illegal. To solve this, companies like LyricFind and Musixmatch act as aggregators. They provide licensed lyrics to services like Yahoo! and MetroLyrics. A U.S. federal court even ordered one network to stop offering unlicensed content.

Today, lyrics are highly integrated into our technology. Search engines like Google have changed how we find them. Since late 2014, Google has included lyrics directly in search results. When you search for a song, the words may appear on the page. Google often uses Google Play to show these lyrics to users. However, users should be careful when searching for "free" lyrics. A 2009 report by McAfee found that such searches carry a high risk of malware. This shows that while lyrics are easy to find, the way we search for them matters.
