He lived a very long time ago. He wrote many songs for groups to sing. Most of his work was lost over time. We only have small scraps of his poems today.

These scraps were found on old pieces of paper called papyri. One special piece was found in Egypt. It is a partheneion, which is a song for young women. These songs were often performed by a chorus of girls. They might sing during a harvest or a special rite.

Alcman used many bright words in his poems. He wrote about the purple petals of flowers. He also wrote about the multi-colored feathers of birds. His poems had a light and pleasant tone. Some people say his songs were very beautiful. Even though he used a local way of speaking, his words sounded sweet. He is remembered as a great lyric poet. His work helps us learn about life in ancient Greece.
